The next Soulsborne game

Elden Ring is an action-adventure RPG that is more than likely the most anticipated and hyped-up game of 2022 and there are multiple reasons for that. First and foremost, Elden Ring is developed by FromSoftware, a company known for its highly-praised “Soulsborne” games that include titles such as Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Sekiro. Elden Ring was said to return to the tried and true Soulsborne formula of highly-challenging gameplay, deep and mysterious lore, and refusal to hold the players by the hand, thus leaving them to figure out the ins and outs of the game mostly on their own. Undoubtedly, this specific style inherent to all Soulsborne games that’s also a major characteristic of Elden Ring has lead to a lot of dissatisfaction from less ardent gamers who’d prefer a more casual experience. However, the unrelenting difficulty level in both the previous Soulsborne games as well as in Elden Ring does not take away from the merits of those games – if anything, it enhances them.

Elden Ring story

Storytelling and story in Elden Ring

In addition to bringing back a praised and beloved gaming formula, another interesting reason that has, no doubt, further increased the hype surrounding Elden Ring is the involvement of the world-famous writer G.R.R. Martin – the author of A Song of Ice and Fire (also known as Game of Thrones), among much other fantasy and sci-fi works. According to the director of Elden Ring, Hidetaka Miyazaki, G.R.R. Martin’s contribution to the development of the game was centered around helping with the world-building, setting, and lore of Elden Ring, as well as making the game more narratively accessible, especially to newcomers to the Soulsborne games, who aren’t used to the highly ambiguous and vague storytelling style prominent in the previous FromSoftware games. Of course, ambiguity and vagueness are still present in Elden Ring in large quantities – the story isn’t spoon-fed to the player – yet the main plot is a bit easier to pick up on without going out of your way to finding obscure items and read their descriptions to get a bit more understanding of what’s actually going on.

Elden Ring story

As for what’s actually going on, we don’t want to spoil anything, so we will only briefly touch upon the premise of the game’s story. Sometimes, before the game’s plot begins, the titular Elden Ring was destroyed and what remains of it are shards referred to as the Great Runes. These shards are now held by demigods who, over time, have become corrupted by the Great Runes’ power. This is where the player’s character comes in – he or she is an exile referred to as a Tarnished and their main task is to defeat each of the demigods holding a Great Rune, claim the Runes, restore the Elden Ring, and become the Elden Lord. Obviously, there’s a lot more going beyond the seemingly simplistic premise of the game’s story, but that is something best enjoyed by playing the actual game and learning about its story in this way.

Open-world immersion

Elden Ring is the first of the Soulsborne game to be truly open-world. While all previous games are often linear, with Elden Ring you get the opportunity to explore a whole new world at your own pace and at your own risk. However, unlike other games that feature an open world, an interesting aspect of Elden Ring is how it uses space – there are hardly any regions of empty space where there’s nothing to be done or discovered. Everywhere you go, there is something that’s worth your attention – the game is full of secret caves, rooms, and other areas that only the keen-eyed would be able to find and uncover, which is part of what gives this game huge replay value. While the game’s main would realistically be completed within 70 hours by the majority of players, to complete all the side quests, learn all the secrets, and experience all the content that Elden Ring has to offer would require a lot more time.

 Gameplay

Obviously, the gameplay is a huge part of most games, but that’s even more true for a game of the Soulsborne series. The game is built around its specific style of combat that, to an outside viewer, may initially seem like the same old hack-and-slash, but once you start playing, you learn that there is a lot more to it. This is typical for all the Soulsborne games – to defeat most enemies, it’s not enough to run straight at them and button-mash your keyboard or controller faster than the enemy could attack you. Instead, timing, using the correct attack move and knowing the attack patterns of your enemies are essential to beating them and progressing through the game.

However, there are also some gameplay and combat changes in Elden Ring compared to its predecessors. In Elden Ring, there’s a notable increase in focus on picking the right time to disengage and heal yourself, because oftentimes, the time window to do that is very small. In other words, in addition to finding the right time to attack an enemy in order to land your strike, in Elden Ring, you also need to perfectly time the instances when you take a moment to ring a healing potion or cast a healing spell. The combat in Elder Ring also gives you the option to summon powerful spectral companions which, while not a necessity to beat the game, can be very helpful.

The last change to the gameplay we want to mention is the introduction of mounted combat – a feature that’s lacking in the previous games. In Elden Ring, you get to traverse the game’s vast world and also charge into battle from the back of a horse, which further adds variety to already diverse gameplay.

Some issues

The main downsides of Elden Ring are that the game is not very well optimized for PC at the moment. Both methods of playing it on an Android device that we will show you below involve streaming the game from a PC, so the bad optimization could lead to performance issues.

Another issue that some players may have with the game is its overall difficulty and the lack of an “Easy Mode”. This, however, is an intentional feature of the game, so not liking it doesn’t necessarily mean that the game is bad, but rather that it may not be in line with the tastes and preferences of some players.

Conclusion

Other than the optimization issues and some bugs here and there that would hopefully be fixed with future patches, Elden Ring is definitely a game worth trying and one that doesn’t betray its hype. If you are into challenging RPG games with rich lore and immersive worlds that don’t hold you by the hand, you should probably give Elden Ring a try.

Can you play Elden Ring on Android?

You can play Elden Ring on Android either with the help of a cloud gaming platform or by streaming the game from a PC at your disposal. Though the game isn’t supported for mobile, you can still play Elden Ring via these two streaming options.

No one expects Elden Ring to be available for mobile, but there are certainly a lot of users who’d like to be able to play this game on their phones. While playing the game natively on Android is obviously not an option, it is, in fact, possible (and quite easy) to play Elden Ring on an Android device. There are two main methods of doing this, and both of them involve streaming the game. The first method is to subscribe to a cloud gaming service that features Elden Ring in its library, and then stream the game via that service. The other option is for users who already have a PC capable of running the game. You can use such a PC to stream the game for free to your Android device. Both methods will be shown to you below, with a couple of different options for each.

How to play Elden Ring on Android

To play Elden Ring on Android, there are two main methods, and both of them involve streaming the game to your Android device. The two ways you can play Elden Ring on Android are via cloud gaming and hardware streaming.

Since this game isn’t supported for mobile platforms and doesn’t have a mobile port for either Android or iOS, the only way you can play Elden Ring on your Android device is if you stream the game. The two streaming methods we mentioned above are quite different from one another and would be useful in different situations. The cloud gaming method involves getting a paid subscription to a cloud gaming service that you can use to stream the game to your Android device. The advantages here are that you can stream the game in any place, at any time, so long as you have access to a fast (> 50mbps) Internet connection and that you have an active subscription to the service you’ve chosen to use. The downside is that such services are typically not free and require a small monthly payment.

On the other hand, the hardware streaming method that we mentioned requires you to already own a PC that can run Elden Ring and has the game installed on it. Also, you’d still need a fast and stable Internet connection, and you’d need to have both the PC you’d be streaming from and the Android device you’d be streaming to connected to the same network. The advantage here is that neither of the three hardware streaming options we are about to show you are paid.

In most instances, we’d recommend using the first method – the cloud streaming one. The hardware-streaming method is only viable if you have a PC that can run Elden Ring, and you want to play the game on your Android device while staying close to that PC so that you could be connected to the same network that it is connected to.
