Here we will take a closer look at what Trk.hingenbrigt is, what “browser hijacker” means for your device and how it has the ability to seemingly sneak into your system without your consent.
Trk.hingenbrigt – a virus?
It is certainly true that malicious applications come in many shapes and sizes. Be it ransomware that would lock your data for ransom, or a virus that would hack your system, or spyware that would track your credentials, we are faced with no end of dangers and annoyances. All these malware threats can have a real negative effect on your devices. Many people mistakenly refer to Trk.hingenbrigt “virus”. In fact Trk.hingenbrigt is not a virus. Continue reading so we can explain the difference.
There is another group of programs that could be way more harmless than ransomware or a Trojan, but still be a source of irritation and disturbance. Such programs are called browser hijacker and Trk.hingenbrigt is one of them. Here we are going to take a close look at this particular program and its behavior. This is a legitimate program which is generally developed to display ads on the user’s screen. By doing so it serves the purposes of the advertising industry and generates income for the developers. Applying the Pay-Per-Click remuneration scheme, they receive an income with every ad that is displayed and users click on. There is nothing wrong with it, but sometimes, these short popping boxes and notifications could load the screen nonstop and really be too invasive.
Due to this behavior, Trk.hingenbrigt is often mistaken with a virus, but it is certainly not as lethal as other types of malware. Its habit of installing a component and tracking your online browsing activity, however, may be undesired by users. They may be disturbed by constantly appearing ads, banners, pop-ups and “mind reading” advert notifications that are tailored to their last online searches. Some people may not really mind it, but others may just wish to be able to remove it. Doing so, however, could be a bit tricky since there is no quick option to stop the ads from being displayed on your screen unless you uninstall the browser hijacker completely.
How did you get a browser hijacker on your device?
Usually, Trk.hingenbrigt comes bundled with another program, software or application that you have downloaded and installed. It is packed inside the installation, mostly in order to recoup the costs of developing an application by earning money from ads for the developers. Therefore, most of the software which is given away for free may contain browser hijacker. If you run the installation without reading the EULA and checking the “Advanced” options in the wizard, you may not know that you are installing it along with the software you want. This is how users usually end up with the ads on their screen without their consent.
How to avoid browser hijackers in future?
Keeping browser hijackers away is pretty much related to what content you interact with. As we already said, you are more likely to find browser hijackers inside free software installation packages. If you don’t want to deal with ads later, do spend a few minutes to read the EULA and check the “Advanced” options in the wizard. There you may find all the programs in the package and simply uncheck the boxes for the browser hijacker you don’t want to install. This simple step will save you from the ads invasion later. And you may even save up a few more MB of internet from loading unnecessary banners and pop-ups.
